Study with me!
Having had the privilege of being involved in music and dance from a young age, my identity, not only an artist, but as a human being, was shaped by the wonderful arts teachers I had growing up. It is for that reason that I am extremely passionate about arts education and hope share with others the things that my teachers gave me: a voice, an outlet of self expression, discipline, and creativity — to name a few.
My Teaching Philosophy
The most important quality in education, to me, is fostering a positive and safe environment for expression, exploration, and curiosity. Singing is a marathon, not a sprint, and it requires slow, meticulous training and conditioning. Every student must have the freedom to learn at their own pace without unnecessary pressure, and as someone who has faced many vocal challenges, I am committed to always uplifting every singer regardless of where they are at on their journey and supporting the ways in which they learn.
I strive to give my students the tools to ultimately have enough confidence to help themselves through technical challenges as well as explore the possibilities of their voices outside of the classroom — I am a firm believer that it is in one’s private practice where they truly learn to sing. I do this by establishing routine vocalises and warm ups that each serve a specific purpose in vocal development as well as providing formulas for effective practice through step by step processes that include warm ups, conditioning, and approaching repertoire. I love facilitating discussions in their lessons about the sensations of singing, allowing them to ask lots of questions and demonstrate curiousity about their voices and the music they sing. In this, I hope to allow students to feel a sense of ownership in their lessons, leading the way in what they want to achieve.
Some technical concepts we will focus on in lessons include:
Developing proper breath support and alignment
Learning a healthy vocal onset and release
Accessing and blending vocal registers for range extension
Building vocal consistency and flexibility in articulation, dynamic control, and agility
Being a singer also requires an ability to story tell. After all, the reason we perform is to make our audience leave the show feeling something! Therefore, along with developing technical proficiency, I like to provide guidance on efficiently learning, understanding, and interpreting music: this includes exploring theory concepts, music history, and text analysis. Along with this, I work to choose repertoire that will suit each particular singer based on their age, skill level, strengths, and interests. Helping students find appropriate repertoire for their unique strengths allows them to communicate their messages through song more freely, comfortably, and easily!
